Have you been giving Him the attention He deserves?

As Christians we are sometimes challenged in how we describe God. How does a finite being, particularly imperfect as we are, describe an infinite and perfect God? One of the ways we describe God is to state that God is good. What we mean by this is that there is no evil at all in God, no untruth. The implication of this is that God then relates to us in ways that are only good and true. James 1:16&17 says, “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (ESV)

Often our challenge is understanding what these good and perfect gifts are because we are trying to understand them from our own perspective. We want a new car, a good job, to be wealthy and healthy. But God is not interested in these things; rather, God is interested in us being all that He has created us to be. And in fulfilling this intent He gives us what we need to be our best, not necessarily what we want.

In this, all too often we ignore God until things go badly in our lives and then wonder where God is. Maybe we pray asking God to fix the situation as if that is the best thing for us. But often, the hard times are God’s way of trying to get our attention in order to establish a relationship with us so he can work with us to be our best.

Next time you ask God for something first ask yourself if you’ve been giving Him the attention He deserves as the all Good God. If you haven’t, focus on that first.
