Seward head coach Jodi Kurtz talks with Ashley Jackson (1) during a break in volleyball action. The SHS girls placed second in the annual North/South Invitational this past weekend. Seward will kick off a three-day run of home games today against Redington.

The Seward High School volleyball team continued its impressive start to the 2017 season this past weekend by nabbing second at the North/South Invitational Tournament in their home gym. Seward posted a 7-1 mark in the two-day tournament, which began on Friday.

"They communicated well, they hustled, and worked as a team," said head coach Jodi Kurtz.

Seward dominated the opening day of the tournament, going 6-0 in games in round-robin play. With their perfect run through the preliminary round, the Lady Seahawks earned the No. 1 seed heading into Saturday's championship bracket.

In the semifinals, the Lady Seahawks pounded out a two-game sweep of the Houston Lady Hawks. The win vaulted the Lady Seahawks into the championship in their third straight tournament outing. Prior to hosting the North/South Invitational, Seward finished second in tournament play in Homer and Nikiski.

Allie Toloff led the Seahawks with seven aces, while Ashley Jackson notched eight digs, Sequoia Sieverts had three kills and Coral Petrosius recorded four aces.

In the finals, Hutchison claimed a 2-0 victory despite solid showings from several SHS players, including Randi Toalson.

The Lady Seahawks will return to action this Thursday when they host Redington. They will host Grace Christian on Friday and Houston on Saturday.
