The Seward High School Lady Seahawks have a few new faces and a new coach this fall and they also have lofty goals. For instance, making a return trip to the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.

"After making it to state last year, I know the girls are shooting to go back," said new head coach Jodi Kurtz, who stepped in over the summer when former mentor Jamie Fredrickson left.

Under Fredrickson, the Lady Seahawks posted an 8-4 record last fall, including a third-place finish at the Southcentral Conference tournament. By taking third, Seward earned one of the conference's three state berths. At the state meet, the Lady Seahawks suffered back-to-back losses to Barrow and Monroe Catholic.

On paper, the Lady Seahawks appear to be in a position to make a return to state a real possibility. Kurtz welcomes back nine veterans in a squad that won the North/South tournament crown in 2016.

Backed with that experience and the depth of having 25 players out for the sport, the team hasn't disappointed their new coach.

"We are doing a few things different this year and they have had to make some changes, and it has definitely made them a better team," she said.

Heading into the season, Kurtz said, the team's three talented seniors will be leaned on heavily for guidance. Among the upperclassmen set to take to the floor in 2017 are middle hitter Jessi Hood, outside hitter Randi Toalson and setter Maille Moriarty.

A 4-year varsity letterman, Moriarty was an all-conference selection last season. Toalson and Hood also give SHS plenty of experience on the floor. Toalson has been a member of the Lady Seahawks' varsity for three years, while Hood is a 2-year veteran.

"They (the three seniors) have been playing prior to high school and are looking forward to their final season in volleyball," said Kurtz, who is being assisted this season by Paige Carter-Kurtz.

Also returning to play a key role will be junior hitter Riley von Borstal. As a sophomore a year ago, she teamed with former standout Tia Miranda to give Seward one of the top hitter combinations in the conference.

Other SHS veterans set to return include junior setters Allie Toloff and Ashley Jackson and junior hitters Maggie Adkins and Coral Petrosius. All saw considerable playing time a year ago.

Kurtz said the key to the team's success this season will be its ability to adapt to a new system and communicate on the floor.

"They need to learn to communicate with each other on the court and to work better as a team," Kurtz said.

Seward will open its 2017 season this weekend when the team competes in the Homer Jamboree.
