The Seward High School Lady Seahawks enjoyed a solid outing at the Grace Christian Invitational Volleyball Tournament this past weekend. The SHS girls went 5-4 overall and finished fifth in the 16-team tournament.

The Lady Seahawks enjoyed a strong outing during pool play action on the first day of the two-day meet. Seward turned in a 4-3 mark in Pool B and entered Saturday’s championship bracket as the No. 4 seed from the Pool B race. Wasilla posted a 7-0 mark on pool action and claimed the top seed. Kodiak and Kenai Central placed second and third, respectively.

By virtue of their fourth-place finish in Pool B play, the Lady Seahawks earned the right to face off against Southcentral Conference rival Nikiski in the first round of championship play. Nikiski had finished fifth in the Pool A standings.

Seward claimed a thrilling 3-game win over Nikiski. After taking the first game by a 25-19 margin, the Lady Bulldogs fought their way back to win Game 2, 23-21, and force a winner-take-all Game 3. Seward won the decisive third frame, 4-2, and advanced to the tournament quarterfinals to face off with Palmer, the Pool A champion.

Palmer ended Seward’s outing by claiming a 25-11, 25-13 win.

Palmer eventually finished second in the tournament standings by falling to Wasilla in the championship game.
