'Captain's Mast' - Jan. 21, 2016


The following is from the journals of the Seward Police Department. Those who have been arrested or summoned are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Jan. 7

22:00 - Individual turned in a stolen phone. He recently purchased the phone and spoke with APD who advised him to turn the phone into SPD.

Jan. 8

07:30 - Verbal warning for speed given on Swetmann near the high school.

18:38 - Caller reported there was a male looking into windows in the area of Ash and Oak streets while drinking a beer. Officer responded but didn’t find anyone in the area.

20:37 - Welfare check on a vehicle in Resurrection South campground. The door had been open for a while. Officer found no one there.

21:15 - Seward Highway closed at approximately Mile 109.

Jan. 9

01:21 - 911 caller reported a subject was not breathing and turning purple. Subject was pronounced dead by the medical responders. Officers responded. SVAC/SVFD dispatched.

12:51 - Citation for speed issued to Abigail Joy Newby-Kew at Third and Madison.

18:35 - Seward Bus driver called to report there was heavy snow from Mile 7 to Summit Lake.

20:45 - 911 call for an ambulance to Glacier View.

Jan. 10

00:20 - Officer contacted subjects in a motor home in Resurrection South campground after hearing loud noises coming from the vehicle. All subjects said that they were fine.

00:35 - Caller reported he received a suicidal phone call from his son about 15 minutes before. The call was forwarded to SAST, as his father does not know his current address. At 00:50 officers were given updated information. SAST called advising that their sergeant spoke to the subject who would not advise of his location and requested that a specific SPD officer contact him. The officer was unable to reach him via phone. Officers were able to locate his apartment, but were unable to contact him.

10:06 - Individual reported losing a Zip-Lock bag full of snowmachine parts and tools in the area of Fourth.

15:01 - Individual called to say that his son had digressed during conversations with him during the day. Officers contacted the son by phone and text. He was agitated and in possession of one gun and possibly more. Subject in custody and officer took him to PSMC for evaluation.

22:57 - Yukon Bar requested an officer for an intoxicated female refusing to leave. Officer contacted suspect Jennifer Brown outside of Sweet Darlings. Brown was placed under arrest and taken to SCJ shortly afterwards for Assault on an Officer.

Jan. 11

00:57 - Individual turned in meds for destruction.

05:00 - Caller reported his girlfriend would not give him his computer. The girlfriend then called SPD and said the reporting party was her ex-boyfriend and he was waiting outside her apartment when she arrived, and would not let her enter her residence. Officer contacted both parties in the parking lot outside of Bayside. The girlfriend said that she did not have any of the reporting party’s belongings. The reporting party left on foot and the girlfriend resided into her apartment.

08:00 - Earthquake: Magnitude 6.9, Talaud Islands, Indonesia. No tsunami threat for Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon or California.

09:09 - Bear Creek fire chief reported that Metco would be doing a burn for the following few days on Old Nash Road.

23:06 - Individual went into SPD to talk to an officer. He said he was being blackmailed.

Jan. 12

00:22 - Caller with Simply Safe reported a residential burglar alarm sounding. Officer responded and advised that all doors and windows were secure and found no signs of attempted entry.

01:26 - 911 caller requested an ambulance to Phoenix.

07:26 - SAST requested that an ambulance respond to a vehicle accident at Mile 5 Seward Highway. Report of one injury.

12:47 - Ambulance requested to meet LifeMed at the airport. SVAC dispatched.

22:54 - Caller reported she heard possible gun shots, screaming and the slamming of doors coming from her neighbor’s house on Oak. Officers responded and contacted Delbert Leavitt Jr. III who was arrested for DV Criminal Mischief III and was taken to SCJ. The homeowner was advised of the incident. The residence was left secured and the two dogs were transported to the animal shelter.

Jan. 13

12:35 - John Hull Jr. arrested at city hall on a SAST warrant (Probation Violation, FTC Conditions of Probation, OC DUI, DWOL, DWLR, PTRP-ASAP) and taken to SCJ.

14:44 - Individual reported receiving a call from someone who said that he was her grandson and he was in trouble in Mexico. The party hung up when she asked too many questions. She checked with family members and her grandson is in Palmer and has not traveled to Mexico.

19:52 - Caller reported rocks on Lowell Point Road. Officer checked the area and found large rocks blocking one lane. Public Works advised and as long as it was passable they would wait until morning to clear.

20:25 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Third and Monroe
