'Captain's Mast' - June 19, 2014

 


The following is from the journals of the Seward Police Department. Those who have been arrested or summoned are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

June 6

22:48 - Troopers arrested James Stark for DUI and took him to SCJ.

23:12 - Verbal warning for driving with headlights off after dark given on the Seward Highway.

23:16 - Verbal warning given for having a headlight out.

23:39 - Verbal warning for driving after dark with parking lights only given at Third and D.

June 7

00:23 - Officers contacted Matthew Wiederholt and Derek Steele who were in a verbal altercation outside the Orca Building. Wiederholt was arrested for disorderly conduct and Steele was arrested for DV Assault IV.

01:15 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Third and B.

01:26 - Verbal warning for tag light requirements issued at Seward Highway and North Harbor Street.

03:30 - 911 caller reported a speeding vehicle just passed them on Seward Highway southbound near Safeway. The reporting party thought the driver may have been intoxicated but hung up after answering initial questions. Officers were unable to make contact with any speeding vehicles.

03:43 - Verbal warning for speed issued on Third near Qutekcak.

04:14 - Verbal warning for speed issued at South Harbor Street and Seward Highway.

04:46 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Seward Highway and Dieckgraeff Road.

23:30 - Caller reported a dead dog at 4th of July Beach. Officer searched the location but was unable to locate the dog.

June 9

00:10 - Officer contacted two subjects on the south side of SMIC while out on another call. They were setting up a large bonfire and were advised not to do so.

01:44 - Verbal warning for unauthorized lights on vehicle given on Fourth in front of the AVTEC gym.

02:02 - 911 caller reported a boat fire in the 1700 block of Alameda. Officer was on scene and said that no flames were showing, only smoke, and that the boat is at Raibow Fiberglass.

06:00 - While an officer was on a foot patrol in the harbor, a deckhand from the Offshore Hunter turned in a found wallet.

09:39 - Verbal warning for speed given on the Seward Highway at the three bridges.

10:08 - AST advised of a silver car with California license plate speeding and swerving down Nash Road towards the Seward Highway. Caller, said the vehicle neglected to pay $5 for parking and when confronted speed out of area.

12:15 - Caller reported that one of the horses was loose and hanging around the road.

13:03 - Individual requested an officer for a 4-year-old girl who had been wandering around the rec camp area. The reporting party contacted the person in charge of the child who was sleeping and would not wake up. Officer contacted the subject in a camper who did not appear to be under the influence and is a heavy sleeper.

17:43 - 911 caller at the Chevron requested a ride home. Subject was PCed with a breath test of .224 and taken to SCJ.

18:26 - Citation for failure to stop at stop sign issued to Michael Robert Mahmood on the Seward Highway at Resurrection.

19:59 - Officer was out with a stray dog. It ran away on Coolidge near the cemetery.

June 10

00:02 - Verbal warning for speed given on the Seward Highway near Sea Lion.

02:06 - Verbal warning for no front plate given at Phoenix and Caines Street.

02:14 - Verbal warning for failure to illuminate headlights after dark in given in the parking lot of the Nazarene church.

07:11 - SAST requested a tone out in reference to a 911 call from subject who advised he was stuck on Mount Benson. He said he began at the Windsong Lodge, crossed the river and began climbing. He was cold and wet but uninjured. BCVFD and SFD were toned for a possible mountain rescue.

07:40 - Verbal warning for stop sign violation and illegal pass given at Metco.

08:31 - Individual reported a male lying in the grass next to the Chamber of Commerce. Officer contacted the subject who was fine and waiting for the bus.

11:20 - 911 caller reported seeing an open burn at the top of Caines Street. Fire Chief advised.

12:00 - Individual requested an officer for a female victim of a sexual assault. Officer responded. Case was AST’s.

14:34 - Ambulance requested to pick up LifeMed at the airport. SVAC dispatched.

22:10 - Individual requested a welfare check on her mother who was intoxicated and staying at the Breeze Inn. She last saw her mother moments ago, lying in the doorway and crying. Officer contacted subject who was all right.

22:14 - Guardian Flight requested an ambulance to meet a flight crew at the airport to assist with transporting a patient.

22:51 - 911 caller requested an officer to the Safeway parking lot for a verbal dispute between a male and a female. The caller said that it was not physical, however the male was preventing the female from leaving the area by securing her shopping cart. Officer contacted male and female, and advised that the two separated and that the scene was nothing more than a verbal dispute.

23:09 - 911 caller requested an ambulance to the harbor ramp near Ray’s for a man who was pulled out of the water. The caller was uncertain if the subject was intoxicated, but he was not coherent. Officer located the vessel occupied by the subject. The subject was assisted to the vessel where a crew mate was able to care for him.

June 11

07:19 - Caller reported an alarm sounding at the Qutekcak building on Third. Officer responded and advised the building was secure.

11:40 - SPD received calls of a horse loose at the horse corral.

15:12 - Guardian Security reported a front entry burglar alarm at the TYC. Dispatch spoke with the employee on duty and she advised they had accidentally set off the alarm.

17:05 - Individual reported that he found a dog that appeared to have been shot at the intersection of Sorrel Road and Delphin Street in the SMIC area.

18:55 - 911 caller from Seward Mountain Raven Lodge requested an ambulance for a 72-year-old woman who fell and hurt her left leg.

19:13 - Verbal warning for speed given at Seward Highway and Sea Lion.

19:55 - Verbal warning for speed given at Third and Van Buren.

20:30 - Individual reported that a black and white bird that fell out of its nest at William’s Tent camping. Alaska SeaLife Center notified.

21:46 - PSMCC ER requested an ambulance for a patient transport from the ER to Seward Mountain Haven. SVAC dispatched.

21:56 - Officer assisted a driver on the Seward Highway next to Essential One.

June 12

08:40 - Verbal warning for speed given at Seward Highway and South Harbor.

15:49 - Troopers arrested Jeremia Oksoktaruk on a warrant and took him to SCJ.

15:59 - Verbal warning for operating motor vehicle on the sidewalk while reading power meters given next to the Holiday Inn Express.

16:30 - 911 caller requested assistance at the MPVFD station for a female having a panic attack. MPVFD/SVAC dispatched.

17:37 - Citation for speed issued to Justin Red at Seward Highway and Sea Lion.

22:10 - Holiday Inn Express reported that a subject was attempting to possibly use a credit card illegally. Officers responded and found report to be unfounded.

23:35 - Verbal warning for no functional tail lights and failure to carry operator’s license issued at Seward Highway and Nash Road.

23:54 - Citation for no proof on insurance issued to Veroneeka Erchinger at Seward Highway and Airport Road. Verbal warning given for inoperable headlight.

June 13

01:01 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Seward Highway and Bear Drive.

15:43 - Verbal warning for improper lane usage given at Fourth and Adams.

16:32 - Citation for failure to register a vehicle issued to Jack MacDonald Jr. at .5 Mile Nash Road. Verbal warning given for no proof of insurance and no registration.

17:01 - Verbal warning for improper lane usage given at Mile 4 Seward Highway.

18:56 - 911 caller reported a reckless vehicle inbound from Mile 4 Seward Highway. The blue Nissan was weaving and not maintaining a consistent speed. Vehicle turned down Herman Leirer. SAST notified.

20:06 - Citation for speeding issued to Benjamin Barry Leibman on the Seward Highway near Sea Lion.

June 14

00:03 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Seward Highway and Aspen.

00:19 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Seward Highway and Airport Road.

00:35 - Citation for speed issued to Casey Alexandria Carruthhinchey on Third near Terry’s Tire.

01:19 - Verbal warning for speed issued to at Seward Highway and A.

01:44 - Officer contacted a vehicle that was on the side of the road near Spring Creek Campground with its lights on. The owner accidentally left the lights on.

01:49 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Third and Washington.

02:10 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Third and Van Buren.

02:19 - 911 caller reported witnessing a male assaulting a female in the alleyway by the police station. Officers contacted the caller as well as a female and her husband, Robert Naylor, outside of the Peking Restaurant. Officers arrested Naylor for DV Assault IV and he was taken to SCJ.

06:33 - Verbal warning for speed issued in the Safeway parking lot.

06:55 - Citation issued to Darryl Stepien at Third and Van Buren.

06:57 - The Breeze Inn reported three individuals were still occupying a room they were asked to vacate 20 minutes before due to numerous noise complaints from other guests, but had refused to do so. While on the phone, one of the subjects left the room and two remained. Officers contacted two subjects who were issued disorderly conduct warnings. All subjects were told they could not drive their vehicle because they were intoxicated.

23:33 - Verbal warning for having head lights off after sunset issued at Seward Highway and South Harbor Street.

23:40 - Verbal warning for speed issued at Seward Highway in the Safeway parking lot.

23:54 - Verbal warning for driving with head lights off after dark issued at Ballaine and Monroe.

June 15

01:13 - Verbal warning for inoperable lights issued at Seward Highway and Sea Lion.

01:34 - Verbal warning for failure to use turn signal issued at Seward Highway and North Harbor.

01:47 - Citation for speed issued at Third and Church.

07:34 - Two 911 callers reported a dumpster fire at Resurrection Campground near the shower house. SVFD responded. SVAC staged at the station.

13:32 - Citation for speed issued to Rajaraman Periasamy at Third and Madison. A verbal warning was given for passing in a no passing zone.

19:58 - 911 caller requested an ambulance to the 29200 block of Lawing near Mile 23 Seward Highway for a 93-year-old woman who collapsed in her daughter’s arms. Life Med was launched.

20:34 - Citation for speeding issued to Praveen Gururaja Yer near the Chamber of Commerce.
