The long delayed refloating of the refurbished Alaska Marine Highway ferry M/V Tustumena is scheduled to take place in the next week. Upon drydocking the vessel at Seward Ship’s a U.S. Coast Guard survey team discovered an unanticipated degree of corrosion affecting the hull and some supporting structures. During the extended downtime the State of Alaska took the opportunity to upgrade engine controls and marine systems networking. Testing of new and upgraded systems including a evacuation slide system and lifeboats will take 2 to 3 weeks after the Tustumena is back in the water at the Seward Marine Industrial Center docks.
