Little League winds up for summer season

Even though it still looks and feels like winter outside, in just a few weeks the snow will be gone and the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd will again be heard at the Seward Little League Field on Fourth Avenue near Waterfront Park. This year Seward Little League is sponsoring teams in a variety of baseball divisions for local youth who turn five years old before April 30 and who are under the age of 13 before this date. The league will hold the 2013 season kickoff and throw out the first ball at noon April 27. Lunch will be provided and parents can learn about the league, ask questions of coaches, and sign up their children. Practices and games will continue through the week following the 4th of July.

Because the various divisions overlap ages with each other, players’ skill level will be assessed at the kickoff event so that coaches can to put together teams that are evenly matched for intra-league play as the season progresses. All the teams are coed this year, and all children, regardless of experience or skill level, are encouraged to come and see what the American pastime is all about. With many older players having the benefit of more than three years of league play a few games with teams from other communities are in the planning stages for this summer. Everyone who wants to play will be put on to a team in an appropriate division for their skill level. This year teams will be fielded in the T-Ball, Minor and Major League Divisions recognized by Little League International.

Since the supply of baseball gear is limited in Seward, there will be a gear swap area for baseball mitts and other gear at the kickoff. Everyone is encouraged to dig through their closets and bring any old or unused mitts so that a player can put them to good use. Also, the league is looking for coaches, assistant coaches and parent volunteers for all divisions as well as fundraising volunteers working the snack bar, field sign sales and candy bar sales. There are volunteer positions available for folks of every ability with time available to help.

Registration fees are $30 for T-Ball, $35 for Minors and $40 for Majors and include uniforms for all divisions. Need-based scholarships are available on a limited basis. Finally, the league is supported by many local businesses and volunteers who in addition to their time, contribute funds for fees and uniforms. Each year, signs are posted along the outfield fence to recognize Seward Little League supporters.
