Books team comes on strong

Seward High School 2012 Battle of the Books team took on competitors last week. Back, from left; Matt Haddow, Emily Brockman, Nick Zweifel and Laura Kromrey. Front; Robin McKnight, Josephine Braun and Kara Knotek.

The Battle of the Books team from competed in the Feb. 13 meet sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. Powered by weeks of practice, hours of reading and several packages of cinnamon rolls, Seward’s Battle Book team steamrolled through the first round of competition to emerge undefeated and the number 2 seed going into the championship round. However, Seward lost a tough battle in the first round of the championships to a well-prepared Nikiski team that didn’t miss a single question.

The Seward BOB team rebounded to defeat a tough team from Connections Homeschooling to secure a third place finish in district competition. Although the team was somewhat saddened to not bring home the championship for SHS, hope certainly has not faded for the future — every member of the 2012 Battle of the Books team was either a freshman or sophomore.
