Pierce's lead in borough mayor's race dwindles to a mere 51 votes

The race for the Kenai Peninsula Borough’s mayor’s position went down to the wire.

According to the borough’s elections office, Charlie Pierce’s lead over Linda Hutchings in the October 24 run-off had dwindled to just 51 votes following the counting of the first batch of absentee and questioned ballots.

The borough clerk’s office was scheduled to count the remaining ballots received through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and then present the final results to the Kenai Borough Assembly on Tuesday evening.

Through Sunday, Hutchings had received 898 of the absentee or questioned ballots to Pierce’s 753.

Through Sunday evening, Pierce had received 50.3 percent of the overall votes cast in the election. Hutchings had 49.7 percent.
