The Seward Seahawks may have won the 2016 Peninsula Conference championship, but that doesn’t mean the team is getting any love from the preseason polls. The Seahawks were predicted to finish third in the conference race.

The Homer Mariners, who struggled through an injury-riddled campaign a year ago, are the preseason favorites to claim the conference championship. Backed by the tandem of Teddy Croft and Noah Fiske, the Mariners could be one of the division’s most-explosive squads.

Croft returns after suffering a season-ending broken leg in Week 4 against Junior. Fiske led all HHS rushers in 2016 with 662 yards.

Head coach Walter Love assumes the reins of the Mariner program this season.

Despite low numbers that forced Nikiski to cancel its season opener against Kenai last week, the tradition-rich Bulldogs are expected to give Homer a race for the conference championship.

Nikiski will be led this fall by quarterback Ian Johnson and receiver Cody Handley.

The Bulldogs have played in the state finals in five of the past six seasons,

The Redington Huskies and Voznesenka Cougars were picked to finish at the bottom of the conference standings. Redington opened its 2017 season with its first-ever victory.

Defending Division III state champion Eielson is expected to vie for the Aurora Conference title. The Ravens defeated Houston in the state finals a year ago.

Barrow is picked third.
