The Seward High School football team will kick off its 2017 season on Saturday with a non-conference showdown against the Valdez Buccaneers. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Steinbrecher Field.

For Seward, the game will encourage the Seahawks to build on the success the team enjoyed a season ago. In 2016, the team went 4-4 during the regular season and advanced to the small-school state semifinals for the second time in the program’s 14-year history.

Seward head coach Kelly Cinereski says his squad will be significantly less experienced than last year’s squad, however, fielding just two upperclassmen.

In Valdez, the Seahawks will be facing off against a familiar foe. Since football was started in Seward, the team has faced Valdez 12 times—the second-highest total among all SHS opponents.

Seward will go into Saturday’s showdown looking to avenge a 26-14 loss to Valdez a year ago. The Seahawks’ Week 2 loss to the Bucs in 2016 marked only the fourth time SHS has suffered a loss to Valdez.

Valdez, which competed in the Aurora Conference, is coming off a 5-3 finish in 2016.
