Two drown when boat capsizes near Resurrection Bay

A Saturday afternoon fishing trip turned deadly for two Anchorage men when the boat they were on capsized near Resurrection Bay.

According to a report from the Alaska State Troopers, the U.S. Coast Guard notified law enforcement officials at 3:01 p.m. that a private fishing boat had capsized “outside of Resurrection Bay.” Troopers, in a dispatch send to local media outlets, noted it wasn’t clear whether they were in the Gulf of Alaska or fishing grounds closer to the more protected waters of the bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard informed troopers that two of the four people on the boat drowned when the boat capsized. Troopers identified the dead as Benjamin Jimenez, 53, and Ferdinand Salvador, 43, both of Anchorage. Their bodies were retrieved and transported to the Seward Fire Department. Both men’s next of kin have been notified.

The two survivors were taken to Seward Hospital with minor injuries, according to the dispatch.
