Gala kicks off opening of Seward harbor

The mermaid - and mermen - are going to take central stage in Seward this weekend when the annual Seward Mermaid Festival kicks off. The three-day celebration traditionally marks the opening of the Seward boat harbor.

The activities get under way on Friday, May 19, with the Pirate & Mermaid Pub Crawl. Participants in the event can visit each tavern and collect a passport stamp and be entered into a drawing for a prize. Additionally, a pirate costume contest will be held. The winner will be announced on Saturday. A kids and adult costume contest will also be staged Saturday.
