Marathon grapplers nab 7 medals

The Marathon Miners Wrestling Club closed out the regular season on a high note this past weekend at the Alaska Battle Cats Freestyle Wrestling Tournament in Anchorage. The team claimed seven medals and finished 18th in the final standings.

Hunter Forshee-Kurtz highlighted the Miners’ tournament appearance by grinding out a 5-0 record and a first-place mark in the Novice 57-63-pound weight classification.

Forshee-Kurts opened the tournament with a quick win over Battle Cats’ star Makai Baylou. From there, he netted an exciting 14-12 win over Interior’s Ezekiel Witt and earned a berth in the quarterfinals opposite Anchorage’s Rhys Garland. Forshee-Kurtz made quick work of Garland, winning his match in just 43 seconds.

After posting a win over Juneau’s Eli Harvey in the semifinals, Forshee-Kurtz capped its run with a win over Witt.

Jack Waldron also collected a first-place medal. He won the Intermediate 137-148-pound championship with a victory over Simitri Hooks of the Popeye Wrestling Club in the championship bout.

Rebekah Christenson and Brett Gilmore narrowly missed gold medals. Christenson was second in the girls’ Cadet 141-153 division, finishing behind Anchor Kings’ McKenzie Cook.

Gilmore wrestled his way to a 3-2 mark and a second-place finish in the Novice 70-73 standings.

Hatden Campbell, Tommy Jarnig and Colt Ogle also claimed medals at the tournament, which was held at Service High School. Campbell was third in the Bantam 46-49 ranks, while Jarnig was third in the Intermediate 48-53 classification. Ogle was third in the Cadet 234-243 division.

Other members of the Marathon team participating in the tournament were Hunter Price, Elias Hidalgo, Anthony Smith, Micah Bruecker, Kotlin Barlow, Eli Higbee, Noah Price, Thomas Cronin, Kekoa Albino, Isaiah Bivins, Jaden Van Dyke, Spencer Brown and Elisha Brueckner.

The team will compete in the Alaska USA State Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Wasilla.
