Norcross, SHS grapplers shine at state

Cole Norcross and the Seward High School wrestling team turned in a solid performance this past weekend at the Class 1-2-3A State Wrestling Tournament in Anchorage. The Seahawks’ four-person squad rolled up 10 points in the meet, which was held in the Alaska Airlines Center.

Norcross highlighted Seward’s efforts at the tournament. The SHS standout notched a pair of wins in the 120-pound weight classification and finished with a 2-2 record.

After opening the championship bracket action with a tough loss to Petersburg’s Teagan Schwartz, Norcross hit stride. He wrestled his way to back-to-back wins over Noatak’s Thurston Mills and Bethel’s Seth Smith to reach the third-round of the consolation bracket.

Hutchison’s Khalil Turner ended Norcross’ appearance at the state tournament by grabbing a narrow 13-9 victory in the ensuing match.

Norcross finished the season with a 33-19 record.

Isaiah Bivins and Simon Estes also collected wins in the tournament, which featured more than 400 wrestlers from throughout the state.

Bivins turned in a 1-2 record in the 113-pound classification. He notched his victory by defeating Aetem Cooke in the first round.

Bivins finished the year at 23-19.

Estes, who competed in the 132-pound division, ran his season mark to 23-18 with a 1-2 showing at state. His win came via a thrilling 3-2 victory over Alex Worhatch of Petersburg.

Jaden VanDyke also wrestled for Seward. He went 0-2 in the 138-pound ranks.

Bethel Regional High School won its record seventh Class 1-2-3A state championship by edging out Homer in the final team standings. Barrow placed third.
