Captain's Mast - Sept. 19, 2013


The following is from the journals of the Seward Police Department. Those who have been arrested or summoned are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Sept. 4

21:44 - Earthquake: Magnitude 5.4, 55 miles southwest of Atka, depth 34 miles. No tsunami.

23:01 - Verbal warnings for no taillights and inadequate driver’s side mirror given at Third and Van Buren.

23:37 - Verbal warning for driving without headlights on after dark given at Fifth and Adams.

Sept. 5

00:29 - Officer advised a subject who was entering the Yukon Bar that had been warned earlier not to enter bars again that evening. Officer trespassed the subject from all bars for the night.

01:18 - Yukon Bar reported several males were smoking pot outside of the window. Officer contacted one subject. Officer found no marijuana on the subject, though he admitted that he smoked some earlier.

02:01 - Officer responded to a report of an intoxicated pedestrian behind the Seward Police Department. Subject was placed into protective custody and escorted to SCJ.

02:09 - Earthquake: Magnitude 5.3, 55 miles south of Atka, depth 27 miles. No tsunami.

02:58 - Officer responded to a request for an officer from New Seward Hotel for a possible DV in progress. Officer contacted the subject who was yelling at another person over the phone. Subject refused assistance from officer.

04:35 - 911 caller from Windsong Lodge requested an ambulance for a 50- to 60-year-old male who was passed out. After SVAC/BCVFD were dispatched the male got up and left the Windsong Lodge. SAST was notified and requested that a Seward police officer respond. Officer found that the subject was dropped off at the Salmon Bake. Officer was unable to locate the subject. SAST advised.

05:08 - Verbal warning for speed given at Seward and Hemlock.

Sept. 6

22:52 - Caller reported there was a party at Kimberly Court. Officers responded and report was unfounded.

23:39 - An individual was advised he was permanently trespassed from the Yukon Bar.

23:52 - Verbal warning for speed given at South Harbor and Seward Highway.

Sept. 7

00:05 - Verbal warning for speed given on Fourth in front of Kenai Fjords National Park.

00:24 - Justin Freimarck, MD arrested for DUI at Fourth and C and taken to SCJ.

01:08 - AST arrested Paul Vermillion for DUI and took him to SCJ.

02:29 - Verbal warning for driving left of center lane given at Seward Highway and South Harbor.

23:05 - Individual reported loud noises coming from Kimberly Court Apartments. Officer contacted four subjects and gave them disorderly conduct warnings.

23:53 - Verbal warning for speed given at Third and Monroe.

Sept. 8

00:15 - Wells Fargo Security reported a bank hold up alarm going off at Wells Fargo. Officers found all to be OK. Wells Fargo security advised that no after hours employee could be reached and that no further assistance was required.

00:46 - Verbal warning for speed given at Seward Highway and Essential One.

01:28 - Verbal warning for failure to use turn signal given on Port Avenue next to Icicle Seafoods.

01:30 - Officers responded to a report a male in a dark hoodie carrying a backpack sneaking around the Harbor Light Condos area. Officers were unable to locate the subject.

01:49 - Officers responded to a report of a fight in progress in the alley behind Essential One. Officers were unable to locate anyone in the area.

02:03 - Verbal warning for speed given at Seward Highway and North Harbor.

02:23 - Verbal warning for failure to use turn signal given at Alice Drive and Phoenix Road.

03:30 - Verbal warning for speed and failure to obtain an Alaska driver’s license given at Seward Highway and Sea Lion.

Sept. 9

00:27 - Citation for speeding issued to Nancy Royer at Seward Highway and South Harbor.

03:34 - 911 misdial.

10:13 - Individual reported a theft at the property at the airport. Officer spoke with the reporting party and responded.

10:24 - Caller from the Chamber of Commerce reported an intoxicated male who was sleeping behind the Chamber of Commerce. Officer provided transport for the subject to Ben’s Country Store.

14:02 - 911 misdial.

14:18 - BCVFD/SVAC dispatched with ambulance to Camp Creekside Bunkhouse for a female with abdominal pains.

23:40 - Verbal warning for headlights out given at Mile 1 Seward Highway.

23:47 - Verbal warning for no taillight given at the corner of Three Bears parking lot.

Sept. 10

00:40 - Verbal warning for speed given on Third between Jefferson and Madison.

00:58 - Yukon Bar requested officer to contact Thomas Pearce who was criminally trespassed from the location. Officer arrested Pearce for Criminal Trespass II and taken to SCJ.

01:33 - Officer issued a summons to Brennan Atherton for minor consuming alcohol. (PBT .107)

02:33 - Cab driver turned in a cell phone found in cab.

07:14 - SFD advised that Engine 3 would be out of service for maintenance until evening.

08:15 - Reports of flooding on Levee Road near the dump. Airport main runway was completely flooded over and the Lowell Point waterfall water was brown. SVFD was aware.

08:50 - Individual reported that a coworker was to be at a work-related trade show in Orlando and had not shown up nor did he make his flight out of Anchorage.

09:30 - Public Works closed Levee Road due to flooding.

13:00 - Safeway reported a tall bald male wearing a red jacket was seen walking through the parking lot looking at different vehicles. Officer unable to locate anyone in the area.

13:00 - National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Resurrection River at Seward until 4 p.m. Wednesday. “Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...dips...or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream...even a small one... on foot. If you encounter a flooded roadway...turn around...don’t drown.

13:43 - Kenai Fjords National Park advised they would be closing Exit Glacier Road due to flooding over a bridge near the visitor center. AST/BCVFD advised.

14:53 - Fire Chief advised that SVFD Engine 3 was out of service till further notice.

15:05 - First National Bank Anchorage reported seeing a male in a silver Dodge Durango park in front of the GCI Store, get out, vomit and then get back in the vehicle and drive northbound on Fourth.

17:03 - Earthquake: Magnitude 4.1, depth 28 miles, 15 miles northeast of Anchorage. No tsunami.

19:15 - Individual turned himself in to SCJ to serve time on a DUI.

21:05 - Individual reported an aggressive dog was running loose around Three Bears and Essential One. ACO responded.

21:21 - Individual reported two dogs in the harbor area which tried to bite him. One dog was brown and the other was black and white. ACO responded.

22:20 - 911 caller wanted to file a complaint against an officer. He was advised that he must go to the station to complete the necessary paperwork.

22:33 - 911 caller reported an extremely intoxicated man at the Alehouse who refused to leave and threatened people. Officer responded and advised the subject that he was trespassed from all bars for the remainder of the evening.

22:49 - 911 misdial.

23:45 - 911 abandoned call.

Sept. 11

02:58 - Individual requested an officer to Bayside Apartments for a recently ended fight that he believed was moving toward Fourth. Officer contacted Marissa Osenga and found her in violation of her conditions of release. Officer took her to SCJ.

06:49 - 911 caller requested an ambulance for an unresponsive male at Spring Creek Correctional Center.

07:27 - Fire Chief would be out of service, in the Anchorage area, for the day.

10:32 - Fire alarm testing at Seward Mountain Haven.

12:55 - Guardian Security reported a burglary alarm in the 500 block of First. Officer responded. Guardian called back and advised all was OK.

13:58 - Individual requested an officer to the airport for a disturbance going on with another person on his property. Officer contacted with both subjects and determined it was miscommunication. All OK.

23:56 - Officer responded to a report of a male/female who were becoming physical with each other in front of Terry’s Tires. Officer contacted two subjects at Fourth and B. Officers spoke with both parties. The female was provided transportation to Murphy’s Motel to retrieve her items and then to another residence for lodging. The male stayed at Murphy’s Motel in his room for the night.

Sept. 12

05:03 - 911 AST dispatch requested SVAC/BCVFD to respond for report of a 56-year-old female who was unconscious, not breathing and cold to the touch. SAST advised trooper was en route.

05:35 - Seward Ship’s Drydock requested an officer for a black bear with cubs who appeared to be stuck in the dumpster. Officer responded and the report was unfounded.

06:08 - Trooper requested an officer to provide a body bag and assist with a death.

08:17 - Regions Bank in Mississippi reported a fraudulent use of a debit card while in Seward.

10:22 - Officer requested case for suspicious circumstances with Post Office.

12:00 - Individual requested a trooper to Exit Glacier Road in reference to a subject who was acting out of control and ran into the woods with two guns and might be suicidal. AST responded and requested an SPD officer to be on standby to assist. BCVFD/SVAC dispatched and staged.

15:21 - Individual reported a blue ATV was driving erratically in the boat harbor.

18:06 - Verbal warning for passing in a no passing zone given at Seward Highway and Nash Road.

20:32 - 911 caller reported a black dog on Bear Drive that was loose and scaring her. ACO reported the dog is named Bear she had spoken to the owner several times about keeping the dog contained. ACO gave owner a verbal warning that if he continued unleashed, she would ticket them.

Sept. 13

00:44 - Verbal warning for inoperable taillight given on Third between Madison and Jefferson.

02:14 - Individual contacted an officer a lost black Rebok small backpack with white writing.

08:01 - Individual reported a black bear cub on Nash Road near Bette Cato Drive.

08:10 - Officer received a report of a blue ATV driving around the small boat harbor. Officer made contact with the ATV at North 72-Hour Lot.

09:58 - 911 alarm from Mountain Haven. Callback revealed all was OK.

10:00 - Officer responded to Essential One for a motor vehicle accident.

12:07 - Glacier View Apartment maintenance requested an officer for tenant who was screaming and throwing stuff around in her room. Officers made contact with the subject.
