It’s all about catching the silvers

At 6 a.m. Saturday fishers from all over start the quest for the biggest coho caught in Resurrection Bay during the nine days of Seward Silver Salmon Derby sponsored by Seward Chamber of Commerce. That big fish brings in a boatload of cash. And there are big prizes for the tagged fish, too.

The big fish nets $10,000, and the Chevrolet of South Anchorage tagged fish hauls in $50,000 or a Chevy pickup.

The second heaviest fish brings in $5,000 and the third $2,500. Other tagged fish prizes include a couple $10,000 and $5,000 fish, a $2,500 fish, and more.

A prize is awarded each day for the big fish of the day.

The price to play is $50 for a derby ticket, good for all nine days, or $10 for one day, plus an Alaska fishing license. Last year 6,000 tickets were sold.

In the past 55 years of Derby, Shirley Baysinger’s 22.24-pounder, caught in 2002, holds the record.

The silvers are here, folks, and they’re doing their pop-and-flop dance out in the bay.
