The Seward High School Lady Seahawks capped their 2017 season with a sensational effort this past weekend. Seward posted a 2-1 record at the 2017 Southcentral Conference Tournament in Homer and finished third in the final team standings.

Backed by seniors Randi Toalson, Jessie Hood and Maille Moriarty, the Lady Seahawks kicked off the tournament on a high note on Friday morning. Seward dispatched seventh-seeded Redington in three games, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-8.

With the romp over Redington, Seward advanced to the semifinal round to face off with third-seeded Grace Christian. The Lady Seahawks had defeated Grace Christian in their regular-season finale a few days earlier to claim the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

The Lady Grizzlies got off to a quick start against Seward, building a 2-0 advantage by winning the first two games, 25-20 and 25-19.

Ashley Jackson, Coral Petrosius and Riley Von Borstel brought the SHS spikers back. Seward scratched out a 25-17 win in Game 3 and then forced a decisive final game by taking Game 4, 25-17.

Grace Christian used a late run in the final game to take a 3-2 victory—and earned a berth in the SCC title game against top-seeded Nikiski.

With the loss, Seward fell into a third-place showdown with upstart Homer. The Lady Mariners, who had entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, rallied back from a first-round loss to Grace to down Redington and Anchorage Christian.

Seward easily claimed the third-place honors with a 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19 decision.

In the SCC championship game, Grace Christian claimed a 3-2 victory over Nikiski and earned the conference’s top seed in the upcoming Class 3A state tournament. Nikiski advances as the No. 2 seed.

Following the tournament, Seward received its share of the postseason accolades as five members of the SHS squad, including coach Jodi Kurtz, were selected to the All-Southcentral Conference roster.

Kurtz was named the SCC Coach of the Year for her efforts in leading the Lady Seahawks to a 20-win season in her first season as the team’s head coach.

Seward had three players—Jackson, Petrosius and Moriarty—named to the SCC first-team. Jackson and Petrosius, both juniors, were tabbed the first-team libero and middle hitter, respectively. Moriarty was the first-team setter.

Von Borstel was a second-team pick as an outside hitter.

Nikiski’s Melanie Sexton was named the SCC Most Valuable Player.
