Spanos punches ticket to state meet

Connor Spanos made sure his 2017 swimming season was extended an additional week by splashing his way on Saturday to a state-qualifying performance at the 2017 Region III Swimming and Diving Championships in Palmer.

The Seward standout punched his ticket to the state meet with an outstanding performance in the 100-yard butterfly race. He turned in a time of 55.30 seconds in the race and finished fourth in the overall standings.

Spanos also notched a sixth-place finish in the 200 individual medley by swimming to a time of 2:10.20.

Hunter Hollingsworth and Joshua Park also competed for the Seahawks. Hollingsworth was 15th in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke. Park was 26th in the 50-yard freestyle standings.

The Seward Lady Seahawks’ 200-medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams highlighted their efforts at the regional meet. Both finished in the top eight.

Elena Hamner, Kylie Mullaly, Lucy Hankins and Meghan Mullaly combined to finish seventh – one spot away from qualifying for the finals in the 200-medley relay. The four recorded a time of 2:18.07 in the race.

Lucy Hankins, Meghan Mullally, Kylie Mullaly and Megan Koster finished eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.90.

Kylie Mullaly and Meghan Mullaly also had solid outings in their individual races. Meghan finished 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle race and 20th in the 100-yard freestyle. Kylie was 16th in the 100-yard freestyle and 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hankins, Koster and Hamner also did well as individuals. Hankins was ninth in the 200 individual relay with a mark of 2:41.47, and 11th in the 100-yard butterfly. Koster swam her way to 23rd on the prelims for the 200-yard freestyle and 25th in the 100-yard backstroke, while Hamner was 26th in the 50-yard freestyle and 23rd in the 100-yard backstroke standings.
