Council postpones hiring Ballou to review contract

Brenda Ballou doesn’t have to worry that members of the Seward City Council have changed their minds about bringing her onboard as the new Seward City Clerk. That agreement is still in place. What isn’t clear is exactly when Ballou will officially take over the role she has filled for the past week.

The council voted on Monday to postpone issuing a contract to Ballou pending a few minor changes in the agreement. Mayor David Squires said he and two other members of the council wanted to meet with Ballou to discuss the changes before tendering a contract. Ballou had served as the Deputy City Clerk under Johanna Kinney.

Squires indicated he and the other council members would meet with Ballou later this week. Once they have discussed the paperwork, he said, they would forward the contract to the full council for approval, possibly at the November 27 meeting.

The city clerk’s position became available earlier this month when Kinney stepped down to take a position with the Seward SeaLife Center.
