At its regular meeting on Monday the Seward City Council approved two 10-year leases with the U.S. Department of Defense for the 11-acre site in the Fort Raymond Subdivision.

Under the agreement, the city and U.S. Army will extend a working agreement that has spanned several decades. The city recently concluded a 30-year lease with the Army for the recreational site.

According to city administrators, the new lease will begin at $22,000 per year and increase in increments until reaching $58,000 at the end of the lease.

In related news, Seward City Manager Jim Hunt informed council members in his report that work had commenced on clean-up at the former Air Force Rec Camp. According to Hunt, Metco will begin demolition and clean-up work at the site once they have completed digging. Hunt said he expects work at the site to be completed by the end of the year.

The city recently reacquired rights to the former Air Force Rec Camp from the U.S. Department of Defense.
