Lady 'Hawks take 4th at Grizzly Invite

The Seward High School Lady Seahawks' volleyball team continued its impressive showing on the court this past weekend by grinding out a fourth-place finish at the Lady Grizzly Invitational in Anchorage. Seward was among 14 teams to participate in the two-day meet.

Seward flexed its muscle easily in Friday's pool play action. The Lady Seahawks pounded out a 5-2 mark in pool action and entered the tournament's Platinum bracket on Saturday. The top teams in pool play were seeded in the Platinum bracket.

Seward didn't waste any time getting off to a quick start in championship bracket play. Maille Moriarty and Riley Von Borstel helped power the SHS girls to a 2-0 victory over Palmer. Seward defeated Palmer by scores of 25-14 and 25-22.

In their next outing, they survived a tough push from Valdez, winning 25-20, 8-25 and 7-3.

The win over Valdez moved Seward into a showdown with Mount Edgecumbe. The Lady Braces claimed a tough 25-21, 19-25 and 5-2 decision.

Seward will make its final home appearance of the 2017 season this weekend when they host Nikiski on October 13 and Homer on October 14.

The Region III Volleyball Championships will be held November 3-4 in Homer. The top three teams at the regional meet will advance to the state tournament in Anchorage on November 9-11 at West Anchorage High School.
