The Nikiski Bulldogs intercepted six passes and forced a fumble on Saturday and rolled to a tough 58-14 victory over the Seward Bulldogs in front of a large crowd at Nikiski High School.

With the win, Nikiski improved to 4-4 for the season and, more importantly, clinched the conference’s runner-up playoff berth. Seward finished its season at 2-6.

Nikiski did most of its damage in the first half. The Bulldogs, sparked by an opportunistic defense, built a 33-0 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back.

Seward did manage to get its offense going late in the fourth. Collin Mullaly gave the Seahawks the spark they needed early in the final frame by taking a pass from Chris Kingsland and racing 76 yards for a touchdown.

Sage Ferguson tacked on a 10-yard scoring run later in the period to account for the Seahawks’ other score.

Offensive running back Shayne Sullivan helped power the SHS offense. He rushed for a team-leading 70 yards on 16 carries. Beau Freiberg added 38 yards on 12 touches before being forced from the game with an injury.

Kingsland completed four of his 10 passes for a season-high 137 yards. is that correct?

Nikiski, with the win, will now advance to face Aurora Conference champion Barrow in the Division III state semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. Barrow improved to 5-2 on Saturday with a 59-7 victory over Valdez.

In the other semifinal game, Peninsula Conference champion Homer will host two-time defending state champion Eielson at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Homer capped a perfect 4-0 run through Peninsula Conference play on Saturday with a 53-0 win over Voznesenka.

The Division III state title game will be played on October 14 in Palmer.
