Amazingly, after months of talks and planning, the only thing the Seward voters accomplished during Tuesday’s regular election was selecting a new mayor.

Former Seward fire chief and city councilman David Squires earned a landslide victory in the race for the position of mayor. He received 81.7 percent of the 443 ballots cast during the 12-hour voting period. Overall, Squires earned the right to replace Jean Bardarson as mayor by garnering 362 votes.

According to Seward City Clerk Johanna Kinney there were approximately 90 Absentee, questioned or Special Needs ballots that needed to be verified and counted by the Seward Elections Canvass Board. The canvass board will meet on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. to certify the results.

With approximately 90 ballots out, the final results of the race for the three seats on the city council, and the decision on Proposition I still hang in the balance.

At the close of voting on Tuesday, the only near-certain result in the city council race is that incumbent Sue McClure will be returning. She received the highest total of votes with 291.

Jeremy Horn and Suzann Towsley finished as the second- and third-highest vote getters. Horn received 230 votes, while Towsley picked up 214 - seven more than Katie Cornwell.

Horn, Towsley and Cornwell are all seeking positions on the council.

In the decision on whether to amend the city charter to allow for three-year terms for council members, a mere eight votes separated the two sides. 226 voted to approved Proposition I, while 218 voted against the change.
