Officers with the Seward Police Department took lethal action against a black bear that attempted to gain entrance into a residence last week.

According to SPD records, officers were summoned to a local residence when a woman notified them that a black bear was attempting to enter her home through a window. The bear had ripped the screen from the window.

After being scared away, the bear vanished into the resident’s back yard and headed east. Later, a second resident alerted law enforcement authorities that the bear had climbed a tree in that person’s back yard.

Upon arriving, officers determined that it was necessary to shoot the animal to ensure public safety. The bear’s body was turned over to a person on the roadkill list with instructions to turn all trophy items over to the Alaska State Troopers.
