Forget the 1927 New York Yankees. The team that everyone should be most afraid of is the Seward High School Lady Seahawks.

Seward continued its impressive march through its scheduled this past week by pounding out three impressive road victories over Kenai Central, Redington and Houston. The Lady Seahawks rode the hot hands of hitters Coral Petrosius, Sequoia Sieverts and Riley Von Borstel to sweeps of all three teams.

Seward kicked off its road swing last Tuesday by pounding out a 3-0 victory over Kenai in a best-of-five match.

Petrosius and Randi Tolson combined for seven service points in Game 1 and helped power the Lady Seahawks to a 25-12 victory. Allie Toloff took the lead in the second game. She broke open a tight 12-6 battle midway through Game 2 by reeling off four straight points that staked Seward to a 16-6 advantage.

Sieverts and Petrosius both notched key points in the final game to cement a 25-18 victory.

“The girls communicated and played great defensively,” said SHS head coach Jodi Kurtz.

The Lady Seahawks followed their win over Kenai with an equally impressive 3-0 win over Redington. Seward won the contest, 25-14, 25-16, 26-24.

The Lady Seahawks, who were scheduled to close out their 4-game road trip on September 26 against Soldotna, capped their week by grinding out a 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 win over Houston.

In the win, Petrosius recorded four kills. Ashley Jackson posted four kills, all coming from the back row, while Von Borstel added three.

“We pulled together as our libero was on,” said Kurtz. “She was getting her passes to the target.”

Maille Moriarty helped power the Lady Seahawks offense against Houston. She recorded 54 sets without an error during the entire match. In the third game, she played as a hitter—and notched four kills on just 10 attempts.

Seward will make its next home appearance tonight against Anchorage Christian. Games will begin at 5 p.m.
