Ruby Lindquist and Emma Moore made sure the Seward High School Lady Seahawks would not miss out on the biggest show of Alaska cross-country season this past weekend. The two seniors legged out top 10 finishes on Saturday at the Government Peak Recreational Area in Palmer and powered their team to a third-place finish in the final team standings at the 2017 Region III Cross-Country Championships.

With the team’s third-place finish, the Lady Seahawks qualified their entire team for this weekend’s Class 1A-2A-3A State Championships at Bartlett High School in Anchorage. The top four teams—along with the top 15 runners not on state-qualifying teams—at the Region III meet earned berths in the state meet.

Lindquist and Moore both proved they deserved to be among the runners competing at the state meet with impressive performances on the grueling 5-kilometer course.

A three-time state qualifier, Lindquist finished second in the individual standings. She turned in a time of just over 21 minutes and finished a close second to Anchorage Christian’s Tessa O’ Hara in the standings. O’Hara secured the girls’ Region III crown with a run of 20 minutes and 40.85 seconds. Lindquist’s final mark was 21:00.90.

Homer’s Autumn Daigle, Alex Moseley and Brooke Miller placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Moore ended Homer’s run in the standings. She finished sixth with a time of 21:44.44.

Hanna Cooney, Sadie Lindquist and Kalista Rodriguez rounded out Seward’s scorers. A freshman, Cooney was the third Lady Seahawk to cross the finish line, checking in at No. 14 with a time of 23:06.99. Sadie Lindquist, a junior, was 16th overall at 23:30.67. Rodriguez gave Seward a fourth runner in the top 20 by completing the 3.1-mile race at No. 20 with a mark of 24:59.27.

Sophia Dow and Shiprah Brueckner also competed for Seward. Dow was 24th at 25:57.15. Brueckner was 33rd at 28:34.72.

As a team Seward finished with 57 points. Homer won the Region III crown with 41 points.
