The Monroe Catholic Rams scored twice in the first half and then held off a strong push from the Seward Seahawks to claim a 15-0 victory in non-conference football action.

With the setback, Seward slipped to 1-5 for the season. Monroe Catholic moved to 3-3.

The Rams, who compete in the Aurora Conference, managed to scratch out the game’s first score midway through the first quarter on a 19-yard field goal by Jordan Higbee.

Monroe Catholic tacked on another score on their final play of the first half when quarterback Trae Puryear hit Yadiel Ortiz with a touchdown pass. The play, which came with just 14 seconds in the half, put the Rams up 9-0 at the half.

Seward threatened to derail Monroe Catholic’s momentum in the third. The Seahawks reeled off an impressive 10-play drive en route to marching to the MC 1. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the offense sputtered from there. On third down, the team suffered a 15-yard loss on a bad pitch. One play later, the Rams quieted the threat by tackling the SHS ball carrier behind the line.

Monroe Catholic closed out the contest with a 1-yard touchdown run from Josh Gray in the fourth.

Beau Freiburg, Shayne Sullivan and Dax Robinson turned in solid outings to lead the Seahawks’ ground attack. Freiburg rushed for a team-leading 63 yards on five carries. Sullivan tacked on 61 on 18 attempts, while Robinson added 59 on 13 totes.

Seward will close out its home schedule this Friday when it hosts Voznesenka in a Peninsula Conference showdown. The game will begin at 5 p.m. at Steinbrecher Field.
