Denali Foldager-Strabel continued to prove to everyone she is among the top long-distance runners in the country this past weekend by winning the Lost Lake Run title. The Seward native won the women’s division by more than a minute despite a sloppy trail.

“It was a mudfest,” Strabel said. “I feel like it was worse at Primrose because all the boys were kicking up mud.”

A perennial contender for the Mount Marathon title, Foldager-Strabel completed the 15.75-mile race in a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes and 27 seconds. Najeeby Quinn finished second in the women’s division with a time of 1:59:56.

According to race results, Foldager-Strabel and Quinn were the only women to finish the race in less than two hours. Only 22 runners in all managed to finish in less than two hours.

The course, a service trail that included 2,100 feet of climbing in the Chugach National Forest, was made muddy and slippery by a heavy rain the day before the race. The course ran from the Primrose Campground to the Bear Creek Fire Department near Seward.

“It was a battle out there,” Foldager-Strabel said.

Despite her strong performance, Foldager-Strabel and Quinn were well off the record pace set by Chris Clark in 1999. Clark posted the fastest time in that event with a mark of 1:49.15, which has since been bested.

Scott Patterson picked up his second win on the eastern Kenai Peninsula in less than 45 days by winning the men’s race. The 2017 Mount Marathon champion, he posted a winning time of 1:37:30. Chad Trammell, who had won the recent TransRockies stage race in Colorado, finished second overall at 1:40:07. Jacob Kirk finished third with a time of 1:40:25.

Jerry Ross’ 2011 course record withstood Patterson’s assault. Ross set the mark of 1:35:16.
