The Crystal Serenity cruise ship began its second historic trip to the Northwest Passage last week. The vessel departed Seward on Tuesday, August 15, for a 32-day voyage. The sailing marks the second year in which a cruise liner will navigate the Arctic Ocean.

The Crystal Serenity, which can carry up to 1,070 passengers, is the first major liner to regularly schedule an Arctic crossing. As of August 21, the Crystal Serenity was anchored at Nome.

The ship is being escorted by the RRS Shackleton. Canadian icebreakers will also be keeping tabs on the cruise.
