Here’s the scoop! The Seward High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams could well be the best combination since Batman and Robin.

Maybe even better.

The Seward cross country teams, despite losing one of the state’s most dominant runners in Hunter Kratz, enter the 2017 season with plenty of optimism. They do, after all, return almost their entire lineup from teams that advanced to the Class 3A state meet a year ago.

The Seward Lady Seahawks team heads into the season as one of the favorites to battle Homer and Grace Christian for the Region III championship. Despite not having a senior on their 2016 roster, the SHS girls raced their way to third in last year’s regional standings--behind eventual state champion Homer and Grace Christian.

Back to lead the way for the Lady Seahawks is Ruby Lindquist, a third-place finisher at the state meet last year. Now a senior, she is looking to finish her prep career with a strong showing.

Also back to pace the SHS girls are senior Emmalee Moore and junior Sadie Lindquist. The two finished 26th and 27th at the state meet last September. Seward will also benefit from the return of juniors Tanis Lorring, Coral Petrosius and Emma Armand, and sophomore Sophia Dow.

Zen Petrosius and Simon Estes key the Seahawks 2017 efforts. The two helped spur Seward to a fourth-place finish in the region a year ago as juniors.

Also coming back are juniors Brendan McMurry and Steven Osborn and sophomore Jaden Van Dyke.

Seward will open its season on August 18 when they compete in the ACS Meet in Anchorage.
