Former Seward resident Jackie Pels won high-fives all around last month when she came in just under an hour of walking at the annual Alamo 5K Run/Walk on June 11.

Pels, who usually describes herself as a 20-minute miler, said she thought she could’ve done even better this year if not for an ankle still healing from a dramatic car crash in Anchorage a couple of weeks before the event.

For finishing second in the 80-and-up age category, the Walnut Creek, Calif., resident was awarded a red ribbon.

A successful writer, Pels has publishes numerous books about Alaska, including “Framed By Sea & Sky, Community Art in Seward, Mural Capital of Alaska.”
