BCVFD celebrates 40th with exhibition

The Seward Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department got to celebrate the anniversary of its founding on Saturday with a little pomp, a live demonstration and some action.

Members of the department kicked off a 40th anniversary gala at 4 p.m. on Saturday that included a free meal for area residents, games and a live exhibition of how the "Jaws of Life" function.

"We want to thank everyone who came out today to help us celebrate," said SBCVFD Chief Connie Bacon during introductions.

Before being summoned for a fire call in Seward, members of the department presented a live display on the use of the Jaws of Life tools. The members removed the doors, windshield and roof from an automobile.

The Seward Bear Creek VFD was founded in 1977 when it became necessary for an additional fire department to be established as a way to protect the growing population north of Seward.

Early on, Leonard Weimar was sworn in to become the temporary chief of the department.

"It wasn't supposed to be for very long," Weimer told the more than 50 attendees. "I was told they would find someone to be chief right after it got started."

That "temporary" position came to an end in 1992 after 23 years when the popular firefighter-and father of the current chief-retired.

During its 40 years of service, Bacon said, the fire department has relied upon a dedicated number of volunteers. Since 1977, that has meant only about 100 members total. "We are fortunate that the volunteers we have tend to stay," she said.

Currently, the SBCVFD has 25 members, including Erick Amburg, Chief Connie Bacon, Koal Backlund, Roman Barlow, Cynthia Beardsley, David Beardsley, Richard Brackin, Colin Brayton, Michael Bryan II, Rocky Elhard, Jared Fink, Trenten Freiberg, William Freiberg, Ludmilla Hedrick, Joshua Hillestad, Travis Hoogland, Wolfgang Kurtz, Colby Lawrence, Catherine Lester, Nicholas Lester, Cole Petersen, Edward Slavich, Marc Swanson, Jeffrey Wolf and Nicholas Zweifel.
