62nd annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby to get under way on Aug. 12

The second jewel of Seward’s annual fishing schedule is preparing for opening. The 62nd Annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby is scheduled to get under way on August 12. The derby, sponsored by the Seward Chamber of Commerce, will run through August 20.

Last year, Mike Hanson claimed the top prize in the tournament by landing a 16.22-pound silver. John R. Ekelmann won the youth division with a fish that weighed 13.76 pounds.

As part of the derby, the fish that are caught are donated by anglers to be sold to raise funds for fish enhancement efforts and fisheries scholarships for graduating high school students.
