Preseason drills begin in a month for area athletes

High school athletes from throughout the state will return to action next month when preparations for the 2017-18 school year get under way.

Members of the Seward High School football program will take to the field for their first day of practice on July 26. The team will participate in preseason drills through August 9, before beginning their season on August 10.

Seward competes in the small-school division’s Peninsula Conference along with Homer, Voznesenka, Redington and Nikiski.

Seward will be looking to improve this fall on a record-breaking performance in 2016. A year ago, the Seahawks streaked to their first-ever Peninsula Conference championship by going 3-0 in league play. By winning the conference, the Seahawks advanced to the state semifinals for only the second time in school history.

The small-school state football playoffs will begin on October 7 with the top finisher in the Peninsula and Aurora conference facing the second-place team from the other conference. The state championship game will be played on October 14.

Joining the football athletes in preseason drills will be members of the Seward High School cross country teams. SHS boys and girls can begin cross country drills on July 26. Like the football athletes, they will practice for 10 days before opening the season on August 10.

The state cross country meet will be held September 30 in Anchorage.
