Council OKs $6,800 for new roof at SAS

The Seward City Council voted to show the furry residents of the area a little love on Monday by approving funds for a new roof on the Alice Pickett Memorial Animal Shelter. The funds were to become available immediately so replacement of the existing roof could begin.

“I’m pleased with that (the authorization for Seward City Manager Jim Hunt to begin replacing the roof),” said Seward councilwoman Sue McClure. “This will work in the interim until we can get a new (shelter).”

As part of its decision, the council OK’d $6,851 to be used to replace the roof. In February of this year, the council spent $20,000 to make other needed improvements to the facility. During those repairs, city officials discovered the existing roof would need to be replaced.

The new roof will help ensure the safety of city employees, residents and animals who are in the building.

Residents have been attempting to replace the aging facility over the past few years, including establishing a website to raise awareness of the facility and to seek potential donors.
