City council accepts $6,367 Volunteer Fire Assistance grant

The Seward City Council stuck some much-needed funds into the Seward Volunteer Fire Department’s coffers on Monday by approving a Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. By accepting the grant, the SVFD will receive $6,361.46.

With the grant, the City of Seward was required to provide a cash match of $2,000. Those funds will be included in the department’s 2017 budget.

According to guidelines, the grant must be used to purchase equipment identified in the grant. Among the items that can be purchased are LED headlamps, handheld spotlights, chainsaws, a circular saw, various electrical adapters and a set of turnout gear.

SVFD officials indicated the items specified in the grant would “provide firefighters with the maximum protection and interoperability needed to protect lives and property of the citizens of Seward.” It would also help the SVFD obtain equipment needed as part of their mutual aid agreement with the ADNR.
