Pray this depth of love will become a reality in our lives

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

John 15:13

You see, according to Jesus, the ultimate test of true love is one’s willingness to die for another, specially your friends. He personally lived this out when He gave His life on the cross for you and for me. While we may never be asked to give up our lives for another, we can live each day putting others needs before our own. Jesus continues to call His followers to show love and sometimes make a sacrifice for the sake of another’s needs.

This is a family story to some, but worth retelling. The mortar rounds were landing in an orphanage run by missionaries. The missionaries and one or two children were killed, and several more children were wounded, including one girl who was about eight years old.

As the medical staff arrived to help they soon realized that the young girl was critically injured. Without quick action and medical attention she would soon die from shock and loss of blood.

As they explained to the other children that a blood transfusion was imperative, the request for a blood donor met with wide-eyed silence and fear. Then slowly one small hand went up as young boy volunteered. He was quickly laid on a pallet and made comfortable, his arm swabbed with alcohol, and the needle inserted into his vein, blood began to flow through the tubing.

All during this time, he lay stiff and silent but continued his quietly but steady sobs. The medical team kept asking him if the needle was hurting him, but he would shake his head in response and continue to cry. After a while the boy stopped crying, and as the nurse began to take the needle from his arm he looked at her with a very puzzled look. The nurse smiled and nodded, a look of great relief spread over his face.

The boy had assumed all along thought he would die during this procedure. He had misunderstood, thinking that he was to give ALL of his blood in order for the little girl to live. Even thinking this, he had volunteered. After all, she was his friend.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus calls you, and I, to show this kind of sacrificial love to the people around us, each day, every day, all day long, not just when it is convenient, easy, or even popular.

Let’s pray that this depth of love will become a reality in each of our lives.
