Seward Flotilla to give away life jackets at opening

The Seward Flotilla, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, will be putting their heart where the boats are this weekend. The organization will be distributing life jackets, at no charge, as a part of this year’s Seward Harbor Opening weekend. The 2017 Harbor Opening event will be held May 20-22.

According to Sue Lang, public affairs officer for the Seward Flotilla, the organization will have a boating safety information table on the Harbormaster Plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. She said life jacket distribution would begin at at 11:30 a.m.. The free life jackets will come in sizes ranging from infant (up to 20 pounds), child (20-50) and youth (50-90). There are limited quantities available. Lang also said Flotilla members were also encouraging boaters to turn in any out-grown life jackets so that they can be given to others.

Following the distribution of life jackets, the flotilla will be staging a group photo for the “Ready, Set, Wear It” campaign. This international event documents everyone’s commitment to wearing life jackets on the water. Participants will gather at the “B” Float ramp for the photo at 1:30 p.m..

Auxiliarists and Coast Guard personnel will also be demonstrating how to plug leaks using the Coast Guard Damage Control trailer in the parking lot to the north of Ray’s Restaurant, and how to operate a P6 dewatering pump on the south end of “G” float, just north of the “B” float ramp.

The USCG Auxiliary is composed of 30,000 volunteers serving the nation and the communities in 1,000 local units.

According to Lang, the USCG contributes over 2 million hours per year in the classroom, at the ramp and pier, and operating 2250 vessels, 180 aircraft, and 1,700 radio facilities on our nation’s waterways.
