Bear safety class set for May 12

The Kenai Fjords National Park and the Seward Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest will be presenting a hands-on bear safety class for area residents on May 12. The class, which will include training on the proper usage of bear spray, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the K.M. Rae Building.

During the presentation, locals will be able to learn how to react in a bear encounter, and become familiar with using bear spray.

Also, attendees will watch a video, a slideshow of bears, and then go outside to practice with the inert bear spray.

Rangers are recommending that individuals attending the class bring a pack with the exterior pocket that bear spray could be kept, or, at a minimum, a belt to attach the bear spray holster.
