The Seward Seahawks suffered a tough 56-51 setback to the Homer Mariners on Dec. 22 in front of their home fans in the SHS gym.

The Homer Mariners scored 19 points in the second quarter on Dec. 22 and then held off a furious fourth-quarter rally to claim a tough 56-51 victory over the Seward Seahawks in a key Southcentral Conference showdown.

With the loss, Seward fell to 1-2 for the season and, more importantly, to 0-1 in conference action.

The Seahawks more than held their own in the opening minutes of the contest. Seward matched Homer point-for-point in the first quarter and went into the second with the score knotted at 10-10.

Unfortunately for Seward, the Mariners got their offense in gear from there. Homer pounded out a 19-8 run in the ensuing eight minutes and took an 11-point lead, at 29-18, into the half.

The Mariners stretched their lead a bit more in the third. The M's posted an 11-9 spree in the frame and went into the final stanza with a 13-point advantage.

Seward refused to go down quietly. The Seahawks, backed by a standout effort from Jonah Deboard, pumped in 24 points in the final minutes and fought to within five at the final buzzer.

The Seward Seahawks will return to action on Jan. 10 when they travel to Soldotna for a non-conference matchup with the Stars.

Deboard finished the game with a game-high 19 points.

Nik Pahno also played well for Seward, finishing with 17 points.

Zen Petrosius added nine.
