Miss Melody wins SPRD basketball title

Miss Melody claimed the top spot in the Adult Basketball League's 'End of Season Tournament' recently. The team edged out Seward Construction for the title.

Sports and Recreation at the AVTEC Gym will be closed for a week, beginning on Dec. 24 to allow SPRD employees tp perform maintenance and cleaning.

The gym is scheduled to reopen on Jan. 1, 2017.

End of Season Tournament

The Adult Basketball League is over and was backed with great turn-out from fans.

Miss Melody claimed the first-place trophy. Seward Construction Company finished second, whiole third-place was taken by the Rough Riders.

The 2016 Sportsmanship Award was awarded to AVTEC.

In other news, Sports and Recreation is in need of basketball referees for the upcoming season. Referees are paid based on experience. Non-certified officials will be paid $25, while certified officials will be paid $45.

End of Season Tourney

On Monday, Dec. 12, the Seward Parks & Recreation Department held the annual End of Season recreational volleyball tourney at the Seward Middle School gym. In all, six teams competed for the first- and second-place title.

Team Aluminati proved to be worthy contenders taking the gold with some great matches against the VJAYS who took second.

Thank you to all the teams that participated in this enjoyable league! – Alaska Sea life Center (Your Worst Anemone), Team Extreme 5000, Alehouse, Set's on the Beach, VJAYS and Aluminati.

We're looking forward to another great season this Winter.

Sports & Rec

Seward Parks and Recreation Department (SPRD) public recreation hours to the AVTEC Gym: the public is invited to drop-in every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Each Wednesday, the public can attend 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Free hall walking in the gym will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., as open gym activities occur for a fee.

The indoor park will be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Roller skating is offered on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The rock climbing wall will be open on Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m.. The wall open to everyone. Participants must have two signed waivers. If under 18 must be signed by a parent or guardian to participate.

BBQ Volleyball League

BBQ volleyball is back! Te new league will run from Jan. 16 to March 6.

Local volleyball enthusiasts are urged to rally friends and co-workers to build a team for fun Winter BBQ League is designed to unify neighbors to play 'just for fun'! Only one competitive player is allowed per team.

Archery League

Every Wednesday from Jan 11 to March 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. the Seward Archery League will be held at the Railroad Terminal for some target practice! The fee is $8 to drop in or $40 for the winter session.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment but some equipment can be made available. Bows should be 70 pounds and lower. No crossbows! The league is open to 16 years of age and up (16 and 17-year-olds welcome with an adult).

League starts Jan. 18

The Winter Volleyball season is here! The league will run Wednesday evenings at the Seward High School gym, beginning on Jan. 18.

Urbach's Youth Basketball

Kick off the season with a free basketball Jamboree on Sat, Jan 14.

Players will meet the coaches, go through drill stations, work on skill development and scrimmage.

The UYB league begins Jan 28 and runs through Mar 25 for pre-school ages through fifth grade. Sign up by Dec 31st to receive a complimentary team jersey.
