Question Your Life

December 15, 2016

As we journey through the Advent season this year our church focused on John the Baptist’s role in serving as the forerunner or announcer of the Messiah this past Sunday as recorded in Matthew 3:1-12. John’s purpose as described in Luke 1:16-17 was to “. . . turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” John’s was not the Messiah, rather, he was given the responsibility of pointing people to the Messiah.

John’s appearance and message would both be considered anti-social in our day and age. He wore unconventional cloths, ate strange food, and called people to repentance as a way of leading them to Jesus. John called people to repentance because one cannot truly accept the promised Messiah unless one first recognizes one’s own sin and resolves to walk away from it. Many in his day rejected his message as they did Jesus but many accepted it.

Repentance requires that we examine everything about ourselves, identify those areas where we are wrong, and choose to put them behind us as we conform to God’s standard. Repentance also entails questioning what we believe and how we live our lives beyond the obvious rule breaking we do. This sort of self examination is certainly not an enjoyable exercise; we’ve often created a false image of ourselves that we can live with and shattering these and recognizing who we really are without the Messiah is painful.

This season I would encourage each of you reading this to take some time and evaluate your life and turn to Jesus who can bring true healing and restoration.

New Beginnings Baptist Church meets in the banquet room of the Breeze Inn on Sundays, 10:30 a.m. for services and fellowship.
