Lady Hawks sprint to 3rd at Region III Championships

The Seward High School girls’ cross country team earned a return trip to the Class 1A-2A-3A State Cross Country Championships on Saturday with an impressive effort on the Tsalteshi Trails in Soldotna.

The Lady Seahawks had four runners finish in the top 20 and raced to third in the team standings at the Region III XC Championships. By placing third, Seward qualified all seven of its runners for the state meet, which will be held on Oct. 1 at Bartlett High School.

Ruby Lindquist led Seward’s efforts at the Region III meet. A fourth-place finisher at last year’s state meet, Lindquist breezed to a return trip by placing seventh in the final standings. A junior, she completed the 5-kilometer course in a time of 20 minutes and 3.3 seconds.

Homer’s Megan Pitzman took home first place with a time of 19:37. She edged out teammates Audrey Rosencrans and Autumn Daigle in the standings. Overall, all five of Homer’s scoring runners finished in the top 10 and helped the Lady Mariners breeze to a repeat of the Region III title. Anchorage Christian’s Tessa O’Hara finished fourth, finishing just ahead of Houston sophomore Allison Van Pelt and Grace Christian senior Grace Cannon.

Seward sophomore Sadie Lindquist also turned in an outstanding effort, as did EmmaLee Moore and Tanis Lorring. Sadie Lindquist finished 17th overall with a run of 21:39.9. Moore and Lorring placed 19th and 20th, respectfully, with times of 21:42.2 and 22:16.4.

Lorring’s time marked a personal-best for her.

Sophomores Coral Petrosius and Emma Armand and freshman Dow also legged out strong efforts. Petrosius finished 28th at 23:06.2. Armand was 30th with a personal-best of 23:24.7, while Dow checked in at No. 1 with a personal-record of 24:24.7.

In the JV division, Ally Chryss finished 24th overall at 24:13.1, while Hayley Unrein was 48th at 26:59.9. Nele Hohenstein and Kalista Rodriguez placed 52nd and 54th, respectively. Hohenstein finished with a personal-best of 28:03.6, while Rodriguez checked in at 28:15.0 - also a personal record.

Madilyn Moore and Rebekah Christianson also notch PR’s in the race. Moore was 57th at 29:06.5, while Christianson was 61st at 30:24.8.
