September 22, 2016

Hunter Kratz and Zen Petrosius both legged out outstanding efforts on Saturday and helped carry the Seward High School boys’ cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Su Valley Invitational in Talkeetna. Overall, 183 SHS runners participated in the meet, which was held on Sept. 17 and featured more than 140 athletes from throughout the state.

Backed by top 15 runs from Kratz and Petrosius, the Seahawks rolled up 92 points and finished just two points behind Palmer for fourth. Grace Christian won the boys’ team title, easily beating out Colony and Wasilla.

While Seward didn’t win the team title, Kratz made sure the Seahawks didn’t come home empty handed. The SHS senior nailed down yet another victory by winning the boys’ individual race. He completed the course in a time of 16 minutes and 1.53 seconds.

His final mark was more than 21 seconds faster than Grace Christian’s Trent Fritzel, who netted second with a time of 16:23.13.

Petrosius placed 13th in the individual standings. He turned in a time of 17:54.91.

Seward also picked up strong performances from several other runners, including Case Estes, Brendon McMurry, Sullivan Hauze and Brooks Berry. Estes finished 25th overall at 18:24.05, while McMurry was 27th at 18:27.36. Hauze checked in at No. 35 with a time of 18:39.04. Berry was 39th at 19:09.22.
