‘Preserving History For The Future” is this year’s theme for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church annual community fund-raiser. It will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 1-4 p.m. in the community room of the Library/Museum.

This historical building has been a community project since its inception in 1904 when local funds were raised to build the foundation, or undercroft. That construction constitutes the lower level of St. Peter’s church. Again, with community involvement St. Peter’s was finally completed in 1916. It was the location of the first public school, the first ‘reading room’ (precursor of our present Library/Museum complex). It has been, and still is, a host to many social organizations & events. This frontier church reflects the ebb and flow pattern of Seward’s history of success and failures.

St. Peter’s has always been generously funded and cared for by our community. In 1925 community funds were collected by Seward citizens to commission Dutch artist, Jan Van Empel, to paint the reredos painting, ‘Resurrection of Jesus Christ as set in Resurrection Bay,’ located behind the altar on the west wall.

Maintaining the integrity and upkeep of this historical church building has always been quite a responsibility for such a small congregation. The Dessert Extravaganza raises only a small portion of what is needed to keep up the maintenance on the 112-year old building. But, as part of its heritage, members like to acknowledge our beginnings by keeping our community involved and having a function the whole community can participate in and enjoy.

The live auction is as spirited as it is fun. There will be a wide variety of fun items and serious auction items up for bid. The live auction always closes program with lots of laughs, whistles and bids as our male auctioneer leads the spirited bidding dressed in a dress. This dress has become a perennial live auction item used for raising fun-and-funds for the “Save St. Peter’s” building fund.

It only takes a $5 donation to avail yourself to a large variety of homemade desserts and a chance to bid on our many live and silent auction items. It’s a great way to protect our history and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
