Hunter Kratz got the 2016 prep cross country season off to a great start on Saturday afternoon by sprinting to a gold medal at the Colony Invitational.

A senior at Seward High School, Kratz claimed a thrilling win at the finish. Following a hard push over the final 11 meters, he held off a strong challenge from Kodiak’s Keith Osowski to net a 1-second victory. Kratz raced across the finish line with a time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds. Osowski finished second at 16:50.

Kratz’s victory didn’t count toward the team standings as Seward didn’t field a team in the race. Wasilla finished first in the boys’ team standings, at the top of a field that also included Kodiak. The Warriors placed three runners in the top 10, including freshman Hunter Hayes, who took fourth overall with a time of 17:38.

Soldotna, Palmer and Colony rounded out the top five teams in the boys’ division. Soldotna finished with 71 points, while Palmer and Colony netted 85 and 91, respectively.

Colony put three runners in the top six spots and edged out Grace Christian for the top spot in the girls’ team standings. The Lady Knights finished with 38 points, while Grace Christian notched 45. Palmer. Kodiak and Soldotna finished third, fourth and fifth.
