61st Silver Salmon Derby set to begin on Aug. 12

The fishing excitement will ramp up considerable this weekend in Resurrection Bay as the annual Silver Salmon Derby gets under way.

The event, which is entering its 61st year, will officially begin on Friday afternoon when the Captain's kick-off BBQ. The BBQ gala will start at 5:30 p.m. and run through 8 p.m. at the Derby booth. Fishing captains and vendors will come to grab a bite to eat and get all the information they need to participate.

The actual fishing will get under way on Saturday, Aug. 13. According to Seward Chamber of Commerce officials, anglers can take to the water at 6 a.m. on Aug. 13. Fisherman will compete through Aug. 21.

Up for grabs are many prizes, including $10,000 for the first-place award, as well as $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third will be awarded. Also being awarded will be a "tagged fish" worth anywhere from $50,000 to the "Derby Double" a 2016 Chevy Equinox. Additionally, don't forget the mystery fish and $1,000 "Yellow Copy" drawing held at the awards BBQ at the Branson Pavilion at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21.

"As one of the oldest fishing derbies in the state of Alaska, this event is revered by anglers all over the world," said Seward Chamber of Commerce's GeNeil Flaherty. "You can find stories in magazines and newspapers: even hear tales on radio shows. The Seward Chamber of Commerce and the City of Seward are excited to host the 61st Silver Salmon Derby and we hope to see you there. Pack up the family and your fishing gear for your chance to take home some salmon, and maybe some cold, hard cash."
