Providence, St. Joseph hospital chains to merge

The merger between Providence Health & Services Alaska and St. Joseph Health is moving forward.

Last week, the proposed merger of the two Catholic hospital chains was approved by the California attorney general who cleared the way for the creation of the nation's third largest non-profit health system - Providence St. Joseph Health. With the merger, Providence St. Joseph Health will have more than 100,000 employees and operate approximately 50 hospitals in seven states, including Alaska.

Among the facilities involved in the merger are Providence Seward Medical Center and Providence Seward Mountain Haven. Other Providence-operated hospitals included in the merger include facilities in Anchorage, Eagle River, Kodiak, Palmer and Valdez. The merger also includes hospitals in Northern California, Washington, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon and Montana.

"Today, we bring together two organizations with shared values, aligned missions and like-minded founders – the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and the Sisters of Providence," said Annette Walker, interim CEO of St. Joseph Health. "Our heritages inspire us to deliver on a new promise to make communities healthier through best practices, expanded access, and greater affordability and services for those who need them most."

As part of the merger deal, the attorney general's office released a 385-page document outlining requirements for the deal, including that Providence St. Joseph Health launch a three-year, $30 million mental health initiative in California that will address depression, addiction, homelessness and other issues. Last Wednesday, the new chain announced it will invest $100 million in a foundation and institute to look into mental health research, prevention and care around the country.
